Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Textile Technology from North Carolina State University

Casey joined JPII in August of 2021 and she loves the family atmosphere at JPII. “All the staff and faculty are so welcoming and everyone jumps in to help and contribute. We are truly a collective team all working together for the best interest of our students.”

Blanton did not know until later in life that she wanted to be a school counselor (her first career was in manufacturing management). “As cliché as it sounds, the students are the best part of being a school counselor. They keep each day looking different.” As a National Board Certified Counselor with a K-12 school counselor professional educator’s license, she enjoys working with students to make informed choices and understand the many opportunities available to them. “Each student needs to know there are several paths to get to their goals. The key is just finding the right path for each student.”

Blanton has two daughters and in her free time she enjoys watching her daughter ride horses, Sunday dinners at her parents with the kids, and jamming out to their favorite songs on road trips.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education and Studio Art from East Carolina University
  • Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from East Carolina University

Jessica Bradsher joined the faculty of JPII in January 2020 as our art teacher to foster the creativity and artistic talents of our students by building an engaging and vibrant art program in an environment that focuses on values and achievement. She loves the family atmosphere at JPII and the incredible dedication our students have to succeed in whatever activity they are passionate about.

She decided to become a teacher after working as a teaching assistant for a really inspiring teacher in high school. “Sharing my skills as an artist has always felt natural to me as I am the oldest of seven children. I grew up teaching and feel that it will always be a part of my life.” Another reason she became a teacher is to watch students discover what inspires them in the art room. “If a student is growing, they are succeeding! In art everyone grows differently, and that is encouraged and appreciated.”

Bradsher was a three-time recipient of the North Carolina Prospective Teacher Scholarship. She received both her bachelor of fine arts (concentration in art education and studio art) and master of fine arts (concentration in sculpture) degrees from East Carolina University.

Away from JPII, you’ll find Jessica proudly showing her outdoor sculpture work nationally and sharing her art with many people and places! She also enjoys spending time with her rescue dog named Indigo and painting watercolor portraits.

  • Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Roanoke College
  • Master of Science in Mathematics from Hood College

Elizabeth Burris enjoys being a part of our growing faith-filled community as a member of the math department. “A strong sense of community is definitely present at JPII. I felt a welcoming presence the first time I stepped on campus and I hope my students feel the same way every time they walk into my classroom,” she said.

From as early as she can remember, Burris has always wanted to be a teacher. “I can remember teaching my pretend classroom of stuffed animals when I was in elementary school. That was definitely my quietest class 🙂” She credits her 9th grade English teacher for inspiring her to become a teacher and a “Teach Prep” elective class in high school for helping her to realize she wanted to have a classroom of her own.

Burris believes in creating a positive, safe, and student-centered learning environment where students are engaged, challenged, and encouraged to take risks. “I believe in making math fun, meaningful, and memorable through teamwork, games, technology, and hands-on activities. When students have those ‘ah-ha’ moments – that brings me so much joy!”

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family (she and her husband have three children), shopping, and playing word games. “I love puzzles and I love college basketball – especially March Madness!”

She believes JPII is truly a family and loves how the faculty, staff, and students all help create an amazing and loving environment. “I love the smiles of the students as they enter the building everyday!”

Christopher loves working with students, seeing them succeed and grow, and helping them reach that “ah ha!” moment. “I knew when I was in 1st grade that I wanted to be a teacher. I never thought about anything else. The teachers I had growing up made such an impact on me that I wanted to be that same force in other students’ lives.” Her greatest reward has been forming relationships with her students that have lasted beyond the classroom and one of the ways she does that is by employing a philosophy her first principal taught her: “I don’t care how you get from Point A to Point B, let’s just end up there together.”

Joe Corley joined the faculty after spending more than 25 years in print journalism, working mostly in sports. While his wife Bonnie was in medical school at Wake Forest, he worked his way up from reporter at a small daily in Reidsville, N.C., to the assistant sports editor of a group of 24 weeklies in Columbus, Ohio, with a combined circulation of more than 600,000. In that capacity, he tutored numerous young writers in improving their craft. Corley has won awards from the North Carolina Press Association and other associations in Ohio where he spent much of his career. Additionally, reporters under him have earned dozens of awards including several for top writers in the state. He stresses clear, detailed, factually correct, and insightful writing that shows a deep understanding of the subject. As his students can verify, he detests plagiarism and laziness!

Corley cares about every one of his students as individuals and finds a way to connect with them so they can learn effectively. Although he has only been a teacher at JPII for just a short time, he has been a part of the school family since the 2014-15 school year. Two of his children are JPII graduates (’18, ’20) and his youngest will graduate in 2023. He has been the cross country coach since 2015 and has assisted with baseball since 2019. Corley and his wife of more than 30 years love JPII and count themselves fortunate to be part of the JPII family!

Corley ran collegiately for ECU in the late 1980s, and was a regionally competitive runner for many years afterward, up until the early 2010s. After a partial knee replacement in 2020, he now is an avid cyclist. If you see him on the roads of eastern North Carolina, give him a little space. He doesn’t want to get hit … again.

Erin Cvetan

Joined JPII in August 2023

Ask former students of Erin Cvetan (pronounced swee-tan) and they will tell you her passion for math is easy to see…and hear…in her classroom. That’s because Cvetan is determined to help her students fully understand math concepts and get past the heavy stigma and negativity that always seems to surround the subject of math. “There’s nothing I love more than hearing students say that they like (or even better – love) math now. ANYONE can do math. They just have to open their mind and be willing to practice. I’ve been known to be loud and crazy at times, but I do what I do to keep the students engaged and to convince them to love math as much as I do.”

Cvetan will be a familiar face (and sound) to many of our students; she spent the last four years teaching middle school math at Saint Peter. She will teach Math 1 at JPII in the mornings and will also work as a math consultant for North Carolina Early Math Placement Testing which is a college-readiness program for high schools that is being extended into middle schools to promote high school readiness.

Prior to becoming a teacher, Cvetan worked one-on-one with students with special needs and was encouraged by many teachers to become certified. When she moved to NC she thought she would give it a try and eight years later she’s still teaching. “I didn’t really have an ‘a-ha!’ moment, and honestly felt that God called me to this profession and continues to keep me in the profession. The students make ‘work’ seem much less like ‘work’ – they make it fun, they keep me young, and they help me to love fully and grow in patience!”

Why math? Cvetan says, “working with young people in my previous job, and tutoring in math throughout college, I saw a need for students (and adults!) to fully understand the math that they were learning, and not just computing math like a robot. I have this crazy love and passion for math, and once I realized I could talk about math to students all day and solve problems with them or even create my own, I couldn’t think of anything else I would rather do!” She admits that her class is not easy, but it is rewarding in the end. “I push my students daily to see their worth and know their full potential. Although I expect a lot from them, I don’t expect them to do everything on their own. I will be there to answer their questions and show support through their transition into high school.”

One of the benefits of coming to JPII for Cvetan is seeing past students in the hallways and watching them continue to grow academically and spiritually; the first students she taught at Saint Peter will be seniors this year. “I look forward to growing professionally as I work with an incredible math team and some former colleagues. What sets Catholic school apart from other schools is the ability to build a relationship with students and faculty that allows us to fully and openly accept our Lord into the relationship with us. I am grateful to be able to pray with students and attend Mass as a school family on a weekly basis.”

Cvetan’s family attends Mother of Mercy Catholic Church in Washington where she serves on the pastoral council. They live on the water in Washington and enjoy boating and fishing. When they are not on the water, Cvetan likes to bake, sew, and cheer on her daughter Riley at the softball fields or her beloved Kansas City Chiefs!

Dameron has been “super impressed” iwth the work ethic of JPII students. “There is a genuine desire to learn! It’s not just about what’s on the test or if they will use it in the future, but the students want to learn the material for the sake of learning. It’s very refreshing!”

When Dameron’s high school math teacher allowed him to explain homework problems on the board for his classmates, he knew he wanted to be a teacher. “It’s rewarding to be able to teach students a subject in which so many of them are afraid.” He holds a professional educator’s M-class License for Secondary Mathematics Grades 9-12. Please help us as we welcome Shelbi Dawkins to the JPII family as our board certified athletic trainer for our 22 sports teams! Dawkins (and her black lab Hank) recently relocated to Greenville from Idaho because she wants to be in a fun environment where everyone supports each other and feels like she found it at JPII. She’s excited for warm weather and barbecue!

“In my junior year of high school, I decided to manage the football team on a whim to meet new people and learn more about the sport and absolutely fell in love with what our athletic trainer did,” Dawkins said. “I spent my junior and senior years attending class, heading straight to the AT facility after class for sports practices for a few hours, then went to my part-time job for the rest of the night. Then I was crazy enough to do it all over again in the morning. I loved it!” Dawkins says she ultimately decided to become an AT because she loves helping people. “I find a lot of satisfaction in watching someone progress from being unable to walk or lift their arm over their head to running out on the football field or having their first serve on the volleyball court.”

Her favorite part of being an AT? “I love doing injury evaluations! I look at it like a mystery I get to solve and it’s fun trying to comb through all of the “evidence” and test results to nail down the diagnosis. I also love interacting with the student-athletes and seeing them accomplish the goals they set at the beginning of the season.”

Dawkins earned her bachelor of science in pre-athletic training and master of athletic training from the University of Idaho. Her AT experience includes clinics, high school, college, and the football team at the United States Military Academy at West Point. In her free-time she loves to be outside, usually hiking, camping, or near a body of water to fish, paddle board, or swim. She also enjoys baking with sourdough, coming up with new types of breads, bagels, and cookies to try.

As we welcome in 2024, we also welcome Melissa Ford to the JPII theology department.

Coming to JPII is a return to the classroom for Ford who taught religion at Annunciation Catholic School in Havelock for four years. She looks forward to getting to know her students and telling them every day that they are fully known and fully loved by their Father in Heaven. “I believe every human being is created on purpose by a loving Father who equips us with gifts and talents that are necessary for the challenges of any particular moment in history,” Ford said. “In many ways, the world around us is broken; however, our calling as Christians is to be agents of healing. God wants to use you to build His kingdom regardless of who you are.”

Ford’s classroom utilizes the Socratic Method because she believes a classroom should be a place of dialogue. “You always have something to contribute to a conversation regardless of age. Also, I think humor is an important element. Laughter reduces stress, increases oxygen levels, and best of all… burns calories! No joke!”

Ford has a master of pastoral theology from Ave Maria, a master of education from Chapman University, and a bachelor of arts in English/dramatic arts from Franciscan University of Steubenville. In addition to her education, Ford met St. Pope John Paul II in a private Mass 20 years ago and “he has formed who I am in more ways than I could ever describe.” In her free time, she enjoys game nights with her family, traveling to the mountains, reading books that make her think about the meaning of life, and visiting the Eucharistic Chapel.

When Kylie Gilroy started working at JPII, she feel like she didn’t just join a school, she joined a family. “Months of praying led me to multiple schools, but after meeting with some of the staff at JPII, I feel my prayers have been answered and I have found where I am meant to be. The loving and supportive atmosphere that surrounds JPII allows me to thrive in my work and grow as a person.”

Gilroy’s initial college major was engineering. “After a year of engineering school, I decided that although I liked engineering, I did not love it. I took a semester away from school to focus on finding what I am most passionate about, which led me into the education field upon my return to college.”

As an educator, Gilroy believes it is her job to teach students in the way they learn best in order to push students to their full intellectual potential. “I have a drive to customize each day to meet the needs of my students because every student has different strengths, gifts, and dreams.” She also believes it is her job as a teacher to shape students into honest, independent, and collaborative citizens, as well as to help develop their moral compass.

Gilroy’s message to her students is that she wants them to know that her classroom is a place to feel safe. “Not only should they feel physically safe from the outside world and outside problems, but they should also feel comfortable with taking academic risks. I like to foster an environment that encourages students to be supportive of each other and encourage academic risks.” Getting to know her students is a priority for Gilroy. “For me it’s more than just teaching math to my students. I love getting to know my students and forming those personal relationships throughout the school year. Establishing trust allows me to be there for my students both inside and outside the classroom.”

Gilroy, who is originally from Ohio, enjoys spending her free time outdoors whether it’s at the beach, on a hike, or on a road trip.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics from Elon University
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech
  • Certificate of Pre-Theology from Seton Hall University/Immaculate Conception Seminary
  • Theology Degree from Instituto Superior Salesiano in Mexico
Daniel Glass has lived in six countries and experienced the culture of more than 40 countries, but he’s excited to be back in North Carolina to join the JPII family as a theology teacher. “I grew up traveling a lot, having spent part of my childhood living in England and China. While I graduated high school in Philadelphia and consider that home, I went to Elon University to study engineering and physics and since then, have always considered North Carolina home in many ways!” Our emphasis on community is what drew him to JPII. “Having a sense of community and family is one of the most important aspects of education for me. I am excited and looking forward to being in the classroom, but I am very excited to be a part of a community and to be present in extra-curricular activities and opportunities outside the classroom.”

Glass has studied evangelization and education to the faith in general which included six years in the Salesians of Don Bosco Formation Program. “I think I knew that I wanted to live this out in a particular way as a teacher through my studies of theology and education. Over these years, more than just classes and information, education in the faith became something that I am passionate about and knew I wanted to pursue as a teacher,” he says. “I think I chose teaching because it is an opportunity to accompany and walk with young people in their faith.”

To do that, Glass uses the approach of Saint John Bosco who believed education is a matter of the heart. This approach seeks a holistic approach to education; more than just educating a mind for information, it focuses on the entire person to help them find a deeper understanding and interest in what is being learned. He believes that this approach seeks to meet the students where they are and build from there. “It seeks to put each student in the best position to succeed and grow to be the person that they were made to be as the protagonist of their education and journey.” And the journey is what Glass likes the most about being a teacher. “While information can be learned and memorized, education and teaching is more about helping the students find joy in learning. I like the aspect and challenge of making information and content something that is alive and dynamic instead of something that ends with a test.”

Glass is a cum laude graduate of Elon University with a bachelor of science in engineering physics, a magna cum laude graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with a bachelor of science in civil engineering, a certificate of pre-theology from Seton Hall University/Immaculate Conception Seminary, and a theology degree from Instituto Superior Salesiano in Mexico. Outside of the classroom, he loves to go hiking and spend time outdoors (he hopes to start training for a triathlon). Other interests of his include reading, travel, playing soccer and basketball, and watching his Philly sports teams as well as Chelsea in the Premier League.

Hughes acknowledges that there are resources for students who wish to learn photography on their own. “However, it is much more fun to learn with others,” she said. “I have some fun activities planned to help provide the practice needed while focusing on various aspects of becoming a seasoned photographer.” She likes to meet students where they are and encourage them to push themselves to not only increase their knowledge, but to also better themselves. “All of my life I have loved working one-on-one with others, to share knowledge I have that helps them understand something they are struggling with. I look forward to doing this in a group setting and seeing the ‘light bulb’ come on when a student truly understands.”

Hughes earned her bachelor of science from the University of North Carolina Greensboro majoring in child development and family relations with a minor in psychology. She also has a certification in professional photography from the New York Institute of Photography. By working with all these organizations it’s been her goal to help create a supportive and cohesive arts community in our area. “I believe creativity allows us to open our minds wider, see the unique wonder in the moment, and truly enjoy what life has to offer.” Holsten has also been a cast trainer at Walt Disney World and worked with the founder of Streetmosphere and leader of interactive improvisational performance for Disney. In New York, she performed classic works by Shakespeare, wrote and performed original plays, and entertained with atmospheric improvisation.

Holsten started teaching while she attended college because she felt like she had something to share. “Through my experiences performing and directing through the years in Florida, New York, and North Carolina, I’ve found I developed a passion for impactful storytelling and comedic timing. I believe we can teach profound lessons and inspire critical thinking through storytelling and humor that can greatly benefit how students might see the world around them.” Her approach? “We learn as we go through play. After I’ve set the ground rules I want my group to explore within the guidelines, start to find out who they are creatively, celebrate it, and see how far they can push themselves as they hone their evolving skills.”

Holsten has a bachelor of science in communication and electronic journalism with a minor in art from East Carolina University. Away from the classroom she loves to spend time with her family and their many pets! She also likes to paint, dance, and travel whenever she can.

  • Bachelor of Arts in History and Philosophy from St. Joseph Seminary College

After teaching social studies for 31 years at Saint Peter Catholic School, Joe Hughes joined the JPII family which he describes as a cathartic experience where he has loved working with older students. “The faculty and students were so welcoming and genuinely helpful in my transition. The spirit of the school is loving and fun. The administration and support staff are phenomenal.”

Educators often get the idea of becoming a teacher at a young age. Such was not the case for Hughes. He first taught religion and PE at St. Piux X in Greensboro for two years in the mid-80s but did not have a good experience. After moving to Greenville, he worked in construction (framing houses) and taught an evening course at Pitt Community College. It was not until 1990 when Br. Robert LaFave (who was principal at Saint Peter) “convinced” him to give teaching another try did he know that he wanted to be a teacher…and (pardon the pun) the rest is history. “I am so grateful I listened to Br. Robert because I ended up loving it and it quickly became my true passion. Teaching is the best job there is. Getting to interact daily with young people keeps you young. Inspiring kids to do great things is the most fulfilling job I can imagine.”

Hughes describes his teaching as a modified Socratic style. “I like to lecture but make sure the deeper points have hit home by asking questions. I believe that writing is the best way to express yourself, so I require my students to write. I also like to have students teach some aspects of different topics. They learn the material much more thoroughly when they have to teach it.”

Hughes is a two-time recipient of the North Carolina History Teacher of the Year award. Upon receiving the award the second time, the award was renamed the Joseph B. Hughes Award which is given annually at the North Carolina State History Day to recognize excellence in history education. In 2013, he received the Monsignor Gerald Lewis Excellence in Teaching Award which honors outstanding educators in the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Raleigh and recognizes, promotes, and encourages teaching excellence. He has also been recognized as a WITN Teacher of the Week.

In his free time, you can find Joe spending time with his wife and son, woodworking, playing or coaching basketball, or in Vegas!

  • Bachelor of Science in Science Education (Chemistry) from East Carolina University

Scott Johnson retired from the public school system after 29 years but chose to continue teaching chemistry at JPII. During those 29 years, Johnson taught locally at South Central for 12 years (including two as department chair) and the last four years at J.H. Rose where he has been a member of the school improvement team and taught standard, honors, and AP chemistry.

Johnson became a teacher after working as a counselor at Camp Willow Run for two summers after his freshman year in college. It was there he realized he could combine his love for science with his personality that enjoys working with teenagers. “I love science, so I wanted a career in science. However, a career in a lab or in industry wasn’t appealing to me. Working with the public and with students suited my personality better so I went into education.” Johnson describes his classroom as “hands-on as much as space, materials, and resources allow with lots of practice! Reinforce and repeat.” He enjoys seeing students grow, learn, become successful and following them from just learning about science all the way to becoming adults and having careers and families. He most appreciates the mission and family atmosphere at JPII as well as all the opportunities the students have in the arts, clubs, and athletics.

Since entering the classroom, he has been a supervising teacher for six East Carolina University science education interns including the Most Outstanding Intern for the 2009 graduating class. While at South Central he coached track and cross country and he coached basketball and cross country at Hickory High School. In his free time, he enjoys spending as much time with his adult children as possible, lots of long walks with his dog, traveling, fishing, woodworking, and attending athletic events at JPII and ECU.

Ever since Barbara was a young child, she knew she wanted to teach. She adored her teachers and attending school; she remembers clearly how wonderful the first day of school always felt: bright, shiny, and filled with infinite possibilities…and a box of 64 new crayons…WITH a sharpener!

Barbara describes her life as “filled with lots of journeys and different adventures” and JPII is her latest journey and adventure. “JPII chose me. Being a part of this wonderful family is God’s doing. He put me right where I needed to be exactly when I needed it. I feel so blessed.” For Barbara, teaching at JPII is a chance to give back to the kids. “Guiding them to create, earning their trust, and “that” magical moment when we open a finished load of pottery…the look in their eyes as they gather their finished pieces? That’s my everything.”

While she loves pottery and sharing her love for pottery with our students, Barbara’s joy has always been found in her family. She is happily married and has three grown, married sons. Her oldest grandchild calls her Bubba; she also has a 17-month-old granddaughter and another granddaughter due in July 2023. Outside of the studio, she’s an avid reader, loves crafting and crochet, spends time in the garden, and occasionally goes fishing.  She also enjoys spending time with fellow potter and JPII physics teacher Kathy Lyles; most Thursday evenings you’ll find Barbara at Kathy’s house “getting my butt beat at Bridge!”

If you ever visit the JPII pottery studio and stick around until it’s time for her students (or Mudbugs as she calls them) to move on to their next class, you’ll hear what she tells them each day as they leave the studio: “y’all be kind out there!” As she says, “kindness is my only motto and I try each day to practice what I preach.”

Lori Kellum is who visitors first meet when entering our school and while her official title is main office manager, she really is our “director of first impressions” (and unofficial candy pusher! 😁) who warmly welcomes guests and tends to whatever needs a student has.

After studying communications at East Carolina University, Lori was a stay-at-home mom, worked as a teacher’s assistant with St. Timothy’s preschool, was the director of the middle school ministry for St. Peter Catholic Church, and then spent many more years as a stay-at-home mom before joining the JPII family. “I love so many things about our school! I love the students; there are not enough words to describe how wonderful they are! I love the people I work with because I think our faculty and staff are outstanding in every way. Most of all I love that we are a family that is centered around Christ. Jesus is at the heart of everything we do.”

Lori and her husband Keith have four children. Nate, a geologist; Sumner, a member of the JPII inaugural class of 2014 who teaches 8th grade science; Jude, a junior at JPII; and Lily who is in 6th grade at St. Peter Catholic School. She loves spending time with her family and friends, reading, listening to music, and playing video games (current favorite: Pokemon Legends: Arceus). “My favorite thing to do is: LAUGH!”

Teaching has been a life-long calling for Kathy Lyles who remembers wanting to be a teacher at the age of 5. “I taught my dolls,” she said. It was a calling that she tried to resist in college, but ended up switching majors at Virginia Tech. “I believe what’s most important is to help a student grow and learn. All kids have a natural curiosity and truly want to learn. It’s important to get to know your student to help them tap into their desire to learn,” she said. Lyles has taught science for 28 years (16 of those as a department chair) but enjoys the family-like atmosphere at JPII that takes the whole child into consideration.

Lyles has lived in two other countries: Canada (high school) and Germany (middle school). She and her husband of 40 years Dell have three grown daughters and a couple of granddogs. In her free time she enjoys traveling, painting, and creating and selling pottery.

When asked why she enjoys teaching, she said, “No two days are ever the same. Kids are great fun and keep me you. They say and do the most interesting things!”

Jennifer Mabe (or Mamma Mabe as she’s known at JPII) loves how she can feel the grace and love of Jesus permeating through the walls of each classroom and on every court and field at JPII because it is more than a school – it’s a family.

Mabe loves transforming students’ perspectives on school – especially math! She believes that it is her job, as a teacher, to create an environment where students want to learn and where they can be actively involved in the learning process. “I REALLY enjoy turning students’ opinions of math class from ‘ugggghhh, math is next’ to ‘yessss, math is next!’ My goal is to meet each student where they are, to create a learning environment where students are confident enough to try, to encourage students when they make mistakes, and to celebrate with them when they find success. Math can be fun…and I accept the challenge to show each student this truth!” She believes that making math relevant to students and providing multiple opportunities for inquiry-based lessons allows students to “own” their education. “High school is an important time in the life of a young adult, and helping them grow as individuals and achieve their academic goals gives me great satisfaction,” she said.

Mabe has a diverse teaching background which includes the traditional setting for seven years at J.H. Rose High School (co-department chair), Pitt County School Early College High School (department chair), Greenville Learning Center, and then three years as an online math instructor for Pitt County Schools Virtual Academy and North Carolina Virtual Public Schools. She has taught Math I, II, III, and IV as well as Discrete Math.

In her free time she and her husband enjoy watching their three children play PGSA soccer and recreational baseball. She also enjoys baking goodies for friends and leading inductive Bible studies.

English teacher Danielle Muñoz wants her students to leave her classroom with skills that will not only allow them to be successful within the classroom, but also in life. That’s why her classroom is structured with foundational academic concepts (grammar, formal writing, and vocabulary) and heavily sprinkled with 21st century learning skills including critical thinking, collaboration, and digital literacy. “I believe that students learn best when they are provided an environment that is structured, fosters creativity, and promotes collaboration,” she said.
Muñoz knew she wanted to become a teacher at an early age. “Growing up, I always loved school and learning in general. I feel very fortunate to have had the best elementary school experience filled with amazing educators, administrators, and community support. Having such a positive early-learning experience certainly ignited my desire to teach.” She decided to become a teacher to share her love of literature and provide students with impactful learning experiences. “I love that every day is different. Students keep things interesting and I love learning from them!”
What drew Muñoz to JPII was what she heard from people in the community: that JPII is truly a family-centered environment and it is a place she wants to be a part of. “I’ve heard nothing but positive remarks from both past and current JPII educators, students, and parents, which is rare when discussing schools!” She is excited to meet our students and their families to learn each student’s goals and aspirations.
Muñoz holds both a bachelor of science in English and English education and a master of education in instructional technology & design from East Carolina University. In addition to her five years of teaching at Farmville Central where she was English department chair, she is also a realtor and has coached volleyball at ECJVC for 13 years. In her free time, she loves spending time with her husband, Mark, and their little girls, Carmen and Ruby. “We love going to the park, taking walks, and exploring the world through their eyes.”

Phillip Schutt finds the natural world around us to be extremely interesting and exciting, and he wants others to see God’s creation the way he does! Starting in August, he will teach life sciences at JPII including biology and anatomy and physiology. He enjoys teaching in a faith-based school where he can help students explore the relationship between science and faith and how they are not mutually exclusive.

Prior to JPII, Schutt was a biology instructor at Pitt Community College, teaching general biology for science majors and non-science majors as well as overseeing as lead instructor a course on developmental level anatomy and physiology. He has also tutored at Huntington Learning Center. He knew he wanted to become a teacher when he realized that other students in high school and college often struggled with topics he easily understood. “I wanted to help them understand it too so they could see how interesting the topics were.”

Schutt believes in getting students to see how everything works in the grand scheme of things, and then they can learn all the big scientific names for those things. “Memorization, while helpful, does no good if the student does not understand the big picture. The best part of being a teacher is seeing that ‘a-ha!’ moment in a student’s eyes when they finally grasp how a seemingly tricky concept is really quite simple.”

Away from the classroom, he enjoys playing board games, card games, video games (sense a theme?), and walking in the woods looking at creatures.

She enjoys helping our students expand their knowledge about a language and culture that many people see every day but do not know much about. “I love seeing students learn a new language and its culture and begin to communicate in a way they never knew before. I love the learning process and seeing young minds experience something new.”

According to Smith, the small class sizes at JPII are perfect for teaching and learning ASL. “ASL is a visual gestural language with its own grammar and syntax, etc. You can not teach by lecturing. I have students actively involved in the process; hands up and moving and voices off while learning to use the language.” Beyond the ability to teach small classes, Smith describes the bond between the faculty, staff, and students as “incredible” and loves seeing the students in more than just the classroom – on stage and on our fields and courts.

Smith has been an adjunct lecturer for American Sign Language Studies classes at East Carolina University as well as an interpreter, instructor, and assistant director for Disability Support Services at ECU. For the past 15+ years she has been a video relay interpreter in addition to freelancing as an interpreter.

As a writing instructor, she aims to inspire students to communicate effectively, so they can clearly express their ideas.  The JPII Writing Center will offer support for students to master academic writing in all areas from summarizing to database research. She says, “I love it when students begin to embrace the learning process for its own sake. Sometimes, students say they hate writing, but hopefully, I can show them that writing is not a formula,  but a way to think and consider what they are learning. I get jazzed when I hear lots of thinking going on in a classroom with the hum of conversation, computer tapping, or scratching of pencils on paper.”

In Melinda’s free time, she writes poetry and book reviews. She’s the 2023-2024 North Carolina Poetry Society’s Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet for Eastern North Carolina. Other honors include the 2023 Randall Jarrell Poetry Contest Honorable Mention and a 2019 Pushcart Nomination from The Comstock Review.  Her fourth book of poems, Dropping Sunrises in a Jar, will be published by Finishing Line Press in the summer of 2024.  She also likes taking long walks, making sourdough bread, and gardening, but most of all she enjoys spending time with her husband, Hunt, and their sweet granddaughter, Wilder Rose.

While at ECU, Willis completed an internship at Saint Peter Catholic School where he was a middle school assistant teacher, co-athletic director, and helped coach baseball. It was during his internship at Saint Peter that he became positive that teaching is what he wants to do with his life. “I love working with kids. Watching the students grow in their faith and their education has been such a privilege and something that I hope I can continue to do for many years to come.”

Willis loves how close knit JPII is and enjoys interacting with the students and helping them with whatever is needed. “Being able to supply students with the knowledge they need to make good choices and succeed is such an awesome feeling. Teachers play a huge role in the lives of children and if I am able to be a role model and help kids grow, that’s an awesome opportunity.”

Prior to attending ECU, Willis joined the United States Army where he passed the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program and was assigned to the 1st Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment from 2012-2015. He went on two combat deployments to Afghanistan while serving in Ranger Battalion.
