Calculus BC is a more extensive and demanding study of Calculus than Calculus AB. Students who receive qualifying scores on the BC test usually receive credit for two semesters of college calculus. The students must take the Advanced Placement exam in the spring to earn credit for this class. A graphing calculator is required, and any TI-83 or any TI-84 is recommended.

B average in Pre-calculus Honors

Calculus involves an in-depth look at functions and the use of limit, derivative and integration concepts in graphing and analysis. The curriculum follows the College Board’s recommendation and students must take the Advanced Placement exam in the spring to earn credit for this class. A graphing calculator is required, and any TI-83 or any TI-84 is recommended.

B average in Pre-calculus OR a “C” average in Pre-Calculus Honors

Calculus continues the study of functions and introduces both differential and integral calculus with applications. The course gives students a strong foundation for college-level calculus. This course

is strongly recommended as a rigorous fourth year math course. Students who take Calculus may qualify to take a placement test for college credit. A graphing calculator is required, and any TI-83 or any TI-84 is recommended.

B average in Algebra II Honors

PSAT score of at least 55

This course is a more rigorous approach to the topics in Pre-Calculus using both an analytical and a graphical approach. An emphasis will also be placed on relating the polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions to data analysis. Students will be introduced to limits, continuity, parametric and polar equations, and matrices. This course prepares students for Honors and / or AP Calculus. A graphing calculator is required, and any TI-83 or any TI-84 is recommended.

C average in Algebra II Honors

PSAT score of 50

Pre-Calculus involves an in-depth analysis of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions including applications. This course prepares a student for Calculus at the high school or college level. A graphing calculator is required, and any TI-83 or any TI-84 is recommended.

In this course the student makes an in-depth study of the number systems and solves equations and inequalities in both real and complex numbers. Algebra skills are applied to linear, quadratic, exponential and logarithmic functions. Students will also study conic section and matrices. There is an emphasis placed on applications and graphing in this course. A graphing calculator is required, and any TI-83 or any TI-84 is recommended.

Geometry Honors is a more challenging approach to the topics covered in geometry. Emphasis is placed on discovering and proving conjectures using inductive and deductive reasoning. The course integrates algebraic and problem solving skills using new geometry concepts. Students are introduced to transformational geometry, fractals and non-Euclidean geometries. A graphing calculator is required, and any TI-83 any TI-84 is recommended.

C average in Algebra I

Geometry is an introduction to deductive reasoning and formal proof. There will be emphasis on developing these skills using topics in plane geometry. These topics include: angles, congruence and similarity of triangles, parallel lines, polygons, circles, area and volume. Problems will make use of the skills acquired in Algebra I. A graphing calculator is required, and any TI-83 or any TI-84 is recommended.

Department recommendation

This course includes a review of operations with integers, fractions, and decimals; solving equations and inequalities in one variable; introduction to functions; linear functions; systems of linear equations and systems of linear inequalities; operations with polynomials; factoring polynomials; and quadratic functions. This course will deepen and extend the understanding of linear relationships, in part by contrasting them with exponential phenomenon, and in part by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend.
