Pre-Algebra: Mastery of the middle school mathematics
Satisfactory performance on a placement test
This course includes a review of operations with integers, fractions, and decimals; solving equations and inequalities in one variable; introduction to functions; linear functions; systems of linear equations and systems of linear inequalities; operations with polynomials; factoring polynomials; and quadratic functions. This course will deepen and extend the understanding of linear relationships, in part by contrasting them with exponential phenomenon, and in part by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. Students will experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.
Please Note: Placement in all math courses requires a teacher recommendation. Several courses also require a placement test or a prerequisite score on the PSAT. Teachers will arrange placement tests when necessary for qualified students. All incoming freshmen will be placed in the appropriate course based on their performance on the entrance exam and review of their current report card.
Most courses require students to own a graphing calculator. The TI-83 or TI-84 family of calculators is strongly recommended.
Students must complete one course beyond Algebra II to be considered for admission to the N.C. University System.
